The panelists:
Cathy McGowan AO:
The first independent member for the rural electorate of Indi (VIC) and the first female independent to sit on the House of Representatives crossbench. During her two terms as the Member for Indi, from 2013-2019, Cathy worked to progress policy on regional development, a national integrity commission, a code of conduct for politicians, and drought policy.
Cathy is a co-founder of the Community Independents Project, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to building community and supporting community-minded Independent candidates get elected to Federal Parliament.
In 2023, Cathy was appointed the Chair of AgriFutures, a national research and development corporation responsible for investing in research, innovation and leadership to strengthen Australiaโs rural industries and regional communities.
Dr John Hewson AM:
An economic and financial expert with experience in academia, business, government, media and the financial system. He has worked as an economist for the Australian Treasury, the Reserve Bank, the International Monetary Fund and as an advisor to two successive Federal Treasurers and the Prime Minister. Dr Hewson was the former leader of the Liberal Party and federal opposition during 1990-1994.
Jacqui Biddulph:
With a background in ag science, Jacqui Biddulph and her husband returned to the family dairy farm nearly 30 years ago. Jacqui has a passion for sustainability in agriculture and firmly believes the farming sector can contribute positively to the energy transition through smart farming, production efficiency and adoption of credible agritech that can lower emissions while not compromising on profit.
She sees physical and financial farm business performance measurement as critical to ensuring agriculture plays a key role in a lower emissions future.
David Mitchell:
A passionate ocean lover who spent his childhood at Smiths Beach, where his deep connection to the coastline has inspired his advocacy work. With a Master in Architecture, David specialises in home developments that create adaptable and accessible homes for diverse communities.
As the spokesperson for the Smiths Beach Action Group, David actively champions environmental preservation and sustainable development in the region.
Lesley Nelson:
A proud Noongar woman from the Balladong and Whadjuk clans and a mother to three sons and a daughter. Lesley has 25 years of experience in various Senior Executive leadership roles within the Aboriginal health sector, the most recent being her current role as CEO of the South West Aboriginal Medical Service.
Lesleyโs passion for innovation and action is strengthened by postgraduate qualifications in Business and Epidemiology, and Master in Business Administration (MBA). Currently, Lesley is completing an Industry Doctorate (PhD), with the University of Technology Sydney. Lesley is a champion for increasing accessible primary health services for Aboriginal communities living in the stateโs vast South West, Lower wheatbelt and central Great Southern regions.
