Chapman campaign launch draws crowd in Cowaramup
More than 150 supporters gathered at the Cowaramup District Hall on Sunday to support Dr Sue Chapman as she officially launched her independent campaign for the federal seat of Forrest.
The hall was abuzz with activity as people signed up to campaign activities, bought t-shirts, and handmade dog bandanas, and provided signatures to endorse Dr Chapman’s candidacy.
“To see the community hall filled with people in our campaign colours, excitedly taking home yard signs and coming up with new ideas to build this movement is incredibly motivating,” Dr Chapman said.
“There is a genuine excitement and joy in recognising that we can do politics differently in the South West.
“For many people, this is the first time they have ever volunteered on an election campaign, and they’re rolling up their sleeves to help - door knocking, running market stalls, and hosting events. I am grateful for the generosity and humbled by the commitment of so many local people.”
Beyond highlighting her regional priorities in housing and healthcare, Dr Chapman used the opportunity to remind volunteers and supporters of the importance of having meaningful conversations with the community.
“We have some big, complex problems that the major parties have put in the too hard basket for too long. Our political system isn’t working for us anymore, particularly in regional and rural Australia. I am committed to working with communities to find solutions together,” Dr Chapman said.
“Our community deserves leadership that listens and is accountable to them. That is the style of representation I am offering.
“We’ve been represented by the same party for the last 52 years. We need to do politics differently if we hope to get better, long-term outcomes for the South West.”
Musician Charlie Youngson, performed an original song written for the campaign, describing it as a ‘letter from his future grandchildren’ encouraging everyone to stand tall and act on the big issues the nation is facing right now.
“Charlie’s song was a powerful call to action and a message of hope compelling us to think beyond three-year election cycles for the benefit of future generations,” Dr Chapman said.
“To have such passionate supporters, young and older, stepping up to share their talents and skills for the benefit of the campaign is special - it’s heartwarming, and I am truly grateful for their unique contributions.
“There are limitless opportunities to be involved in the campaign, and with a little creativity, we’re having a lot of fun. That’s what our campaign launch was all about.”
